BANGALORE: The High Court on Wednesday gave a green signal to the BBMP to widen the Sankey Road, which is part of the project to widen the road between Bashyam Circle and Yeshwantpur Circle. The court had earlier stayed the widening after residents of that locality had filed a petition against it. However, the court directed that the project should be completed within 12 months.A division bench headed by Justice N Kumar and Justice H S Kempanna, gave the go-ahead. It also said that tree saplings have to be planted elsewhere, as compensation for the trees cut. The court in its marathon order also said that the Sankey Tank should not be harmed and the BBMP should work with NGOs to avoid chopping of trees.Though the project to widen the proposed road to 30 metres was initiated way back in 1984, no development has taken so far. With the stay order being vacated by the court, the BBMP will take up the road widening to a uniform 27-metres.The Palike had earlier clarified that if it had to implement the revised plan, it has to cut 733 trees between Cauvery Junction and Yeswantpur Circle. However, to save the trees, the BBMP has reduced the width of the road so that 463 trees can be saved from deforestation.
