HC pulls up Mayawati govt over encephalitis
The court has directed the govt to submit a report on steps taken to prevent the spread of the disease by Oct 30.

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has taken note of the encephalitis outbreak in eastern Uttar Pradesh and pulled up the state government for it.

This came just days after CNN-IBN reported how nearly 500 children had died in two months.

The court has directed the government to submit a report on the steps taken to prevent the spread of the disease, by the October 20. The court said that the situation was no less than a national emergency.

The court also ordered that a meeting of experts be convened at New Delhi in the next 15 days to chalk out an effective strategy.

The court said the meeting shall be attended among others by the Director of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme run by the Centre, joint secretary of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Directors General of Medical Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education of Uttar Pradesh as well as the Principal of BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, where most of the Japanese Encephalitis patients are being referred.
