ROURKELA: Farmers of Sundargarh are the worst hit as far as erratic monsoon is concerned. If the two previous monsoons were erratic in nature,this year, excessive and uneven rainfall have damaged crops in the district.Monsoon began on a normal note before it dwindled in July. This month, againstthe normal rainfall of 211.5 mm, Sundargarh received an average of 602 mm. Farmers’ hopes for a good harvest have been shattered with non-paddy and paddy crops being damaged in the heavy rain.The Nuagaon block that has been reaping rich dividends from cash crops, hasbeen the worst hit with 916 mm of rain followed by 812 mm in Bonai and 724 in Rajgangpur block.Six blocks received over 618 mm, while the rest eight blocks got between 419 and 529 mm of rain.A CPM delegation led by party district secretary Banamali Dhupal on Friday submitted a memorandum to Collector Rupa Roshan Sahu demanding compensation for the affected farmers of the Bonai sub-division. Croploss has also been reported from Lefripara, Tangarpali, Kutra and Bargaon blocks along the banks of the Koel and the Sankh rivers.However, Deputy Director of Agriculture (DDA) Narendra Behera said therehad been no reports of crop loss due to heavy rain.The administration will carry out a joint verification to ascertain crop loss in places which were flooded recently.
