New Delhi: Heavy police force has been deployed in Outer Delhi's Bawana area apprehending tension over the conduct of Muharram procession in the area.
A 'Mahapanchayat', held on Monday, had demanded changing of the route of the procession in the area claiming that it would disrupt traffic and businesses.
An alternate route was chalked out with consent of both the communities following police intervention, and it will be curtailed to JJ cluster and not come toward the town and will also be observed in a "subdued" manner.
However, tension remained high after local leaders raised objections and provocative speeches and slogans were made at the gathering which was attended by hundreds of people.
Around 1,000 policemen have been deployed in the area and along the routes which will be closely monitored by senior police officials.
Commando teams have also been deployed and the Special Branch (Intelligence) is in touch with people of both the communities to avoid spreading of rumours.
Talking about the issue, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said, "We are keeping a close eye on Bawana, Trilokpuri and other sensitive areas. We had information a month back regarding tension prevailing in the area (Bawana) and preventive steps were taken. We were in touch with the Peace Committee."
"I also appeal to the people to avoid spreading any rumours. If any one is found to be involved in such activities they will be dealt with strongly," he said.
He also said that Delhi Police have collected evidence of those spreading rumours through Whatsapp and social networking sites, and have warned that legal action would be taken against anti-social elements who get themselves involved in such activities.
