Nippon Kerala Centre in association with the Kochi Corporation commemorated Hiroshima and World Peace Day on Monday.Mayor Tony Chammany inaugurated the public meeting organised in connection with it.A documentary film was screened and photographs of the ravages of atomic bombing during the Second World War were also displayed on the occasion. An essay competition was held for the students on the topic ‘World Peace- Today and Tomorrow’.
Fr Clement Vallisery, manager, St Alberts College, and Geetha Swaraj also spoke.
Commemoration Programme
Commemorating the events at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the students and teachers of the history department, UC College, Aluva, launched a four-day programme here on Monday.
In a unique display of concern to the nature, the teachers and students hugged all the trees situated on the campus. Visiting students from Japan, who were also active participants at the event, showcased the making of the Sasaki cranes. Sadako Sasaki, diagnosed with leukaemia in the wake of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, attempted to make 1,000 such paper cranes in her battle with the cancer.
Various other events like war documentary screenings, musical performances calling for world peace and a debate on nuclear power plants will be held. UC College principal T Thomas Philip and Sebastian Joseph spoke.
