New Delhi: The Bansal Inquiry Committee on Monday began investigating the corruption among Members of Parliament in their Local Area Development (MPLAD) Scheme.
The editor of the TV channel that conducted the sting has been summoned before the panel on January 25.
At the first meeting, the committee constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and headed by senior Congress MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, has decided to view the footage of the sting operation.
The task of the Bansal Inquiry Committee — which has been asked to submit its report by January 31 — assumes significance as the earlier probe in the cash-for-query scam resulted in the expulsion of 10 MPs from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha.
The meeting was chaired by Mr Bansal and was attended by VK Malhotra (BJP), Mohammad Salim (CPI-M), Devendra Prasad Yadav (RJD), K Kuppuswamy (DMK), Ram Gopal Yadav (SP) and Prasanna Acharya (BJD).
Codenamed Operation Chakravyuh, the sting operation was conducted by the news channel Star News and was telecast on December 19.
The video showed seven MPs striking deals to get projects implemented in their constituencies using funds from their MPLAD Scheme.

Introduced in 1993, the MPLAD scheme allows MPs to undertake development works in their constituency.
While some MPs have utilised the Rs 2 crore available to each of them to create durable assets in their constituencies, others appear to have abused the scheme, evident from the revelations of the sting operation.
