CEHNNAI: There is going to be a ton of music, some great acting, an ‘extraordinary’ true story and of course, a first-class after-dance party. What else can we be talking about but the first full-length Wilbur Sargunaraj feature film? Aptly titled ‘The Simple Superstar, the movie will give the YouTube music sensation’s fans a peek into his life. “The movie is about how I became India’s first YouTube Star and that journey. People will see all the tiny things that I have created and how they were created – and what makes Wilbur Sargunaraj what he is,” reveals Wilbur. Directed and produced by Jay Fields, a Canadian director, casting and location hunts for the film is on in full swing. It will also definitely incorporate some good music. “Music is an integral part of the film. We are actually getting trained musicians to make some remixes. They will be from Beirut, Lebanon, and will make a first class remix!” Wilbur informs. “Though the Love Marriage star admits that he has been approached by many directors from his home state Tamil Nadu, he says he chose to stick with the Canadian director. He validates, “Jay has a very high Cultural Intelligence (CI). So, I was very impressed. He handles a lot of cross-cultural issues in his films that are beautiful.” CI is evidently important to Wilbur. “CI means to understand who you are, to get back to your roots. It also means to be willing to explore it in the people who are different from you.” But it definitely is something quite difficult to do, he says. “It is difficult to do in our society because we don’t like people who are different. But I always tell people not to be close minded and learn from other cultures.” He adds, “CI is not something I practise on-screen, but also off-screen, when I meet people. It has definitely made me who I am.” His true identity is another thing that Wilbur has managed to retain throughout his career. “For me, it’s all about being original. I don’t want to be the next Justin Bieber. When people come to me and say they don’t like my music, I tell them that for every one person who doesn’t like my music, there are 100 others who do,” Wilbur says. “I don’t live my life based on what others think. I live it based on what the people close to me think.” He adds, “My mother always told me that I was extraordinary, so I grew up thinking I was always extraordinary.”
