BANGALORE: There is a banner on Malleswaram 7th Cross that reads, ‘Whoever puts garbage here will be fined Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000.’ But that seems to be no warning signal. It actually looks like welcome home sign for garbage. Plastic bags and household wastes are dumped recklessly around the area. In spite of banner, the place is overflowing with debris.“People have turned a blind eye to the notice and are dumping garbage, plastic covers and trash in front of the residents’ houses,” says Shalima, a resident. The garbage dumped in the yards is posing a serious health threat for the residents and shopkeepers of the area. The BBMP on its part seems to be more defensive rather than apologetic. Though many residents had sent letters and even made phone calls asking the Palike to clean up the mess in the area, the BBMP officials turned a deaf eye to the situation as they are not taking any stable and safety measures to clean the garbage. M Chand Bosha, a shopkeeper who run a small business in the area spoke to City Express about the pending civic problems in the locality. “The BBMP is not taking any serious precautions to clean the garbage permanently. The most shocking part is that the BBMP workers who sweep the roads are also dumping the garbage in front of the residents’ houses, where the banner of BBMP is seen hanging,” he said.Another resident Mukunda narrated his experiences by stating that the they need to call the BBMP officials daily on the phone, requesting them to collect the garbage. “They usually pick up the garbage in the morning but the uneducated residents throw there again, in spite of the banner being in full display,” he added. He further mentioned that there is no one to keep an eye on the garbage being thrown in the area. “Shopkeepers of small kiosks who sell tea dump all the used cups at the end of the day and even some motorists throw thrash while going to their offices from the bikes,” he said. He urges the BBMP officials to keep the road clean and stable as muddy and unclean roads will attract more dumpyards in future. The residents say that they fear the spread of diseases because of the unhygienic conditions in the areas. Garbage mixed with rainwater can become a breeding place for mosquitoes. Even more during the festive seasons, the BBMP officials refuse to clean the thrash. They say that they will continue work only once the festive season is over,” says a resident on the condition of anonymity.Manjunath Raju, the corporator of Malleshwaran was contacted by the City Express, and when asked about the reason behind the banner and the inaction on the part of the Palike, he responded by saying that they had put the banner just to scare the residents living nearby. “But we have been unsuccessful so far as people are boldly dumping gabage in the area in spite of notice,” he said.
