THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After a day which witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state, the India Meterological Department (IMD) has extended the heavy rainfall warning till Friday morning. “Isolated locations in the state would receive heavy rainfall, the intensity of which may exceed 7 cm, as the low pressure has positioned over Kanyakumari region on Wednesday,” IMD sources said.“The Met has also issued warning to fishermen since strong onshore wind with a speed occasionally reaching 45 to 55 km per hour is expected along the north-westerly direction,” the IMD website said.On Tuesday, a trough of low pressure developed over south-west Bay of Bengal near the south Tamil Nadu coast which triggered heavy rainfall in south and central Kerala. The low pressure formation and associated upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to trigger widespread thundershowers in the state. Aluva received the highest amount of rainfall on Tuesday. It reported 13 cm rainfall. Chengannur (11 cm), CIAL (10 cm), Kunnamkulam (9 cm) and Manjeri (8 cm) reported very heavy rainfall. Kollam, Kollengode, Ottappalam and Tiruvalla reported 7 cm rainfall. All other stations reported fairly widespread rainfall.Meanwhile, the rain brought much respite from the scorching heat. Minimum temperature fell by 2 to 3 degrees celsius over many parts of the state. It was below normal in many parts. Punalur recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 21 degrees celsius. Maximum temperature fell in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kottayam districts. Kannur and Kozhikode recorded the highest maximum temperature of 35 degrees celsius.
