In Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district, despite the soaring temperatures, people are not being able to indulge in mangoes due to the delayed harvest this year. A few mangoes that the farmers were able to harvest are being sold by the side of the national highways after drying them. In the majority of the cases, the mango trees are getting infected. Among these, only one tree with few leaves and more mangoes bears fruits. This has gained the attention of the locals who stop in the area to rest under the shade of the and admire the mangoes.
The East Godavari district is known for their delicious and juicy mangoes. In the rural areas, farmers are still earning their livelihood by growing and harvesting mangoes. A few tenant farmers rent a few acres of land to grow mangoes every year and earn their income. However, this year, April is almost about to end, yet the markets are not filled with mangoes.
On the other hand, this single tree on the Rowthulapudi- Kotananduru road in the Kakinada district, has been bearing many mangoes. The locals claim that these are Panchadara Kalasa, aka, Panchadara Kalisam variety of mangoes that is native to Andhra Pradesh and known for its sweet and juicy taste. The name means sugar pot because of its pot-like shape and sweet taste. It is commonly eaten by squeezing or sucking the juice.
This unusual incident of just one mango tree bearing fruit has left the farmers baffled. They are unable to fathom the reason. Until the fruits ripen there is no point in plucking the mangoes from the trees. Hence, the farmers wait for it to ripen and then fall off by itself. Meanwhile, the summer heat has also made the tree wither and droop. The locals claim that the Panchadara Kalasa variety of mangoes does not always turn out sweet. Some are extremely sweet, while others have a hint of sourness. The rates of these mangoes are also high.
The farmers are claiming that this year, everyone will have to wait till May end to eat mangoes. Trees are getting infected, while some are not bearing fruits. In others, the pods are quite small and by the time they ripe and reach the market, it will be the end of next month.
