Life in the northern region of Bengal has been virtually paralysed due to heavy rainfall . On Tuesday, a vehicle got stuck in the water while crossing Fagu Jhora on the way to Judhabir Higher Secondary School in the Gorubathan area of Kalimpong district, near the border of Jalpaiguri district. On Tuesday, the 27 students from Farsitar Forest settlement left their homes in their pickup van as usual. While crossing the Fagu river, which the van did on a regular basis, a strong wave of water made the van slip into deep water. Panic spread among the students in the car. The quick response of the local people in starting the rescue operation ensured that the students in the car were safely evacuated.
With the prompt efforts of the Kalimpong administration and the cooperation of the local people, children were safely brought out. The attendants in the van itself carried the students back across the river, regardless of the rising water level.The teamwork displayed in the rescue efforts highlights the community’s readiness and ability to respond to such emergencies effectively.
According to a student named Nani, the incident happened around 8 am in the morning. After slipping into the water, the van would not move, however much the driver tried to accelerate and steer. The students ultimately could not go to school that day as they could not cross the river.
According to locals,a sudden flash flood came in the area, which caused this incident. The unexpected deluge, referred to locally as Harpa Ban, was a result of the continuous heavy rains. These flash floods are notorious for their sudden onset and the significant volume of water they carry, often catching people off guard and causing such dangerous situations.
