BANGALORE: In what may be a historic day in its 91-year history, the Institute of Engineers (India) is organising an alumni meet for the very first time during the 26th Indian Engineering Congress, scheduled to be held in the city from December 15 to 18.It is worth noting that the alumni of the IE(I) include illustrious names in academia and industry, spread across the globe. Express spoke to S A Satyamurthy, Convenor - IEI Alumni, who said that it is an attempt to bring together as many members of IE(I) as possible.“The Institute has seen more than three lakh persons passing out of as Associate Member of Institution of Engineering (AMIE).Many have gone on to become vicechancellors, heads of organisations, chairmen of PSUs among other posts. We want to honour them through a formal communion,” he explained.Indian Engineering Congress (IEC), as a flagship annual event of the IE(I), creates a platform for industries to showcase their products to the discerning engineering community.It also provides a platform for policy makers, technocrats, researchers, academicians and experts to interact, and generate useful insights for all participants. “We have recognised a large group of members who want to contribute to the institute. Often here, the problem is that networking amongst members happen within specialized branches.Through an alumni meet, we want to facilitate networking beyond branches,” said Satyamurthy, adding that it would help.Some of the famous alumni members of IE(I) are former VC of Anna University Dr E Balaguruswamy, Director General of CPRI Dr N Murugesan and President of IE(I) - Karnataka State Centre Dr G Prabhakar. The meet to be held on Bangalore Palace Grounds, is based on the theme ‘Towards Prosperous India: Challenges for Engineers’.
