CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation went all out to publicise their polio vaccination campaign, conducted on Sunday, as part of a nation-wide programme. Posters, banners and autos exhorting mothers who had children aged below five years to get the drops administered to their kids were spotted all over the city, on an otherwise quiet holiday. The Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) officially began nice and early, as Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy arrived at the Health and Welfare Home in his constituency to administer the first vaccination of the day.As this marks the eighth polio-free year in the state,  the Mayor said that polio vaccination was something that would be made increasingly accessible, till the disease was eradicated globally. He also outlined how the Corporation had set up as many as 1,126 vaccination centres, besides mobile units and transit points. The latter included places of public congregation for transport such as bus terminii and railway stations. These places had IPPI counters, stocked with drops.Doctors, nurses, paramedics, government, and volunteer staff who were deployed, worked hard from 7am till 4pm to ensure that they had a realistic shot at immunising their target of 5.5 lakh infants in one day. Besides these, private medical practitioners also assisted by offering free polio immunisations for infants who were brought to them on Sunday, even if for other medical maladies.
