THIRUVANANATHAPURAM:  ‘Incendies’, the film that won eight awards at the 31st Genie Awards, including best motion picture, best actor (Lubna Azabal), best director, best adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing, overall sound and sound editing, will be screened at the Lenin Balavadi as part of the Banner Film Festival on Sunday. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the story is in essence a family drama, astonishingly intense and impressively poised. It begins in the style of a detective thriller, yet its climax is reminiscent of tragedy. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the main character of the film, Nawal, has been superbly played by the Belgian-Moroccan actress Lubna Azabal. Her scenes are all in flashback, and we see her first as an idealistic teenager, as a rebellious adult fighting for justice and as a prisoner suffering brutality. Her story features child soldiers, episodes of war, terrorism and sectarian violence. ‘Incendies’, which means ‘scorched’, is based on a stage play by the Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad. The time of the screening is 2 pm. Turkish film ‘Kagit’ (Paper), directed by Sinan Cetin, will be screened just before ‘Incendies’ at 11.30 am. The storyline is about Emrah, a dreamer who hopes to be a great director, trying to shoot his first feature film. His father Mehdi, a retired Customs enforcement officer, believes that Emrah is going to become a pharmacist. Emrah manages to cobble together funding from producers with the help of his friends and his mother Ahane, but is held up by the bureaucracy. The inaugural film ‘We Have a Pope’ directed by Nanni Moretti deals with a unique situation resulting from the death of a pope and the papal election that followed. At the time of public announcement, while the cardinal proto-deacon is to announce the name of the new pope, the newly-elected pope has a violent fit of panic and runs away. The spokesperson of the Holy See manages to evade questions from the press by reporting that the new pontiff needs time for prayer and reflection. But according to the laws of the Church, until the pope does not appear before the people on the balcony, the ceremony of election is not over and the whole conclave cannot have any contact with the outside world. The time of screening is 9.30 am. The concluding film of the festival ‘Tree of Life’, directed by Terrence Malick, starts off with the formation of the universe. As the galaxies expand and planets are formed, voices ask various existential questions. On the newly-formed Earth, volcanoes erupt and microbes begin to form. The film ends far in the future, when the planet Earth is destroyed, first burnt to cinders by the Sun, when it has turned into a red giant, and then left alone as a desolate, lifeless and frozen place still orbiting around the Sun, which by that time has turned into a feeble white dwarf.
