Jalandhar: Four days on, there has been news of a miraculous escape in the Jalandhar factory building collapse. A survivor literally walked out on his own from under the debris after being helped out by rescue workers. Despite being trapped for over three days, the factory worker Nitesh Kumar came out almost unscathed.
However, there are still dozens more still feared to be trapped under the debris. So far, 10 people have lost their lives in the collapse, while 61 others have been rescued.
Rescue efforts continued at the site for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday.
After visiting the scene earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that special safety audits would be conducted in all industrial units in the state to prevent such mishaps.
The audits would be conducted by industries and local government departments to ascertain both latent and patent defects in buildings, he told reporters.
Racing against time, rescuers sifted through the debris to extricate those still believed to be trapped in the rubble of the factory building which collapsed midnight Sunday in Focal Point area.
Police had arrested the factory owner and registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
