Jammu cops say no to plastic
Over 60 policemen are on duty at the Raghunath Bazaar lecturing shoppers, mainly tourists, on the harmful effects of plastic.

Jammu: The police in Jammu have raised vigil at well-known markets and railway stations. However this time around, they are not looking for militants.

In Jammu's Raghunath Bazaar the men in khaki are out on a mission. They are rooting for a clean and green environment and are targeting people with plastic bags.

The sentence is a lecture on the harmful effects of plastic.

Over 60 policemen are on duty at this 150-year-old market handing out paper bags to shoppers and asking them to deposit polythene bags at an appointed area.

"This is the busiest place in Jammu city. Most tourists come here to shop and then proceed to places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg. We are requesting tourists to exchange plastic in favour of biodegradable bags," says Jammu SSP, Mukesh Singh.

The police have printed more than 50,000 bags to be distributed at railway stations and other tourist spots.

The plastic collected in exchange for the paper bags will be sent for recycling.
