New Delhi: Shooter Jaspal Rana on Monday joined the campaign for the execution of Mohammad Afzal, who has been sentenced to death for the Parliament attack, as he honoured families of those who died in the 2001 terror strike.

Rana put his signature on a large board reading "Afzal ko Phansi Honi Chahiye (Afzal should be hanged)" as part of an All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) campaign for the execution of the death-row prisoner, whose clemency petition is pending with the President.

He honoured the families of the security personnel who were killed in the attack five years ago with bravery awards instituted by the AIATF.

AIATF chief M S Bitta presented Rana, who has won three gold medals in the Doha Asian Games, with a 'Pride of the Nation' Award during the event commemorating the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack. Later, Rana met former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his residence in a courtesy call.

Anguished with what they believe are political attempts to save Afzal, the families of the Parliament attack victims have decided to return to the President on Wednesday, the anniversary of the terror strike, the posthumous honours they have received from the government.

In his speech, Bitta, a former Youth Congress chief, lashed out at politicians, without naming anybody, for joining calls to grant mercy to Afzal. He also referred to the delay in execution of the man, Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, who has been sentenced in connection with a bomb attack on him in 1993.

Former Intelligence Bureau Chief Ajit Dival was also present at the event.
