Thiruvananthapuram: The JD(S) faction loyal to M P Veerendrakumar has removed former prime minister H D Deve Gowda as party's national President and choose veteran socialist Surendra Mohan to head the party on Friday.

The decision comes as a reaction to Gowda dissolving the Kerala unit of the JD(S). Party members accuse Gowda of deviating from the party's secular policy.

Gowda's decision could not be accepted as he had "ceased to be the JD(S) president by deviating from the party's professed policy of secularism," PTI quoted Veerendrakumar as saying.

"Gowda had ceased to be the President once he decided to form a government in Karnataka in coalition with the BJP. The party's stand had all along been clear that it would not be part of any alliance with BJP, negating its secular principles," Veerendrakumar told PTI.
