Srinagar: The doctors and paramedical staff at a government hospital in Srinagar were beaten up the the police for reportedly violating the curfew. The doctors said they were merely attending to duty. However, the police said they had violated the curfew.
A curfew has been clamped down in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir following protests over the killing of a youth in Baramulla during demonstrations in the area, allegedly over Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging. The locals alleged the youth was killed in Army firing. However, the Army denied it. On Wednesday, the police filed an FIR against the Rashtriya Rifles unit in Baramulla.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the Omar Abdullah government and the Centre to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The Congress' Saifuddin Soz has written to the Union Home Ministry seeking repeal of the law. The issue was raised in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly as well and opposition PDP staged a walkout and boycotted the state budget over the issue.
