New Delhi: Seven more Jawaharlal Nehru University students have been detained on Saturday for protesting the arrest of JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar at Indira Gandhi International Centre.

There has been no end to the controversy over an event in the university campus protesting the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Kumar was arrested on Friday and remanded to three-day police custody by a local court, a day after police filed a sedition and criminal conspiracy case against him on complaints from BJP MP Maheish Girri and ABVP members.

Meanwhile, CNN-IBN has accessed letter sent by the Delhi Police to the University Vice Chancellor saying that it has identified six students, including Kanhaiya Kumar, who raised anti-national slogans. The police said arrested Kanhaiya Kumar was seen leading a mob of nearly 100 people.

In the status report sent to the Home Ministry, the police stated that on February 9, which was Afzal Guru's third death anniversary, the PCR got a call of unrest on campus.

According to the FIR in the case, students were holding controversial and anti-national posters. There was a clash between two groups at Sabarmati dhaba around 5 pm. The FIR said that JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid were leading around 80-90 students and there were 15-20 women students. The FIR added that pro-Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat slogans were being raised with a section of students sloganeering 'Pakistan Zinzabad'.

After receiving an interim report from its disciplinary committee probing the involvement of the students at the event, the University has debarred eight students from academic activities pending a disciplinary enquiry.

Condemning the crackdown on students, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said, "JNU doesn't have cameras on campus, where did video come from? What's happening in JNU is worse than Emergency times. 20 people have been named, including D Raja's daughter."

Earlier in the day, defence veterans jumped into the fray and threatened to return their JNU degrees if alleged anti-national activities continue in the campus. They have told the University Vice Chancellor that it is becoming difficult for them to be associated with the university.
