JNU row: Bumbling Bassi & too many unanswered questions
Both Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Police chief BS Bassi engaged in conversations with fake Twitter handles inviting a barrage of ridicule.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has made a U-turn by opposing the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar. Earlier, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi himself had stated that they won't oppose bail plea.

The Delhi Police maintains that it has evidence against Kanhaiya, but so far most facts that have come into public domain remain shrouded in mystery. The preliminary case was registered on the basis of video footage aired by a private news channel.

Fact or fiction: That private news channel airs video footage of the meet at JNU where "seditious" slogans were raised. But questions have been raised about the authenticity of the video.

Fact or fiction: Producer of that private news channel has quit alleging that tapes were doctored to give a certain impression; news channel editor said producer never worked on the video.

While Bassi maintains he has evidence, both Home Minister Rajnath Singh and the Delhi police chief himself engaged in conversations with fake Twitter handles inviting a barrage of ridicule.

Last week Bassi told CNN-IBN that he didn't act against goon lawyers at Patiala House Court as it would have worsened situation, same goons boast about how they beat up Kanhaiya in court in front of cops.

Bassi also told CNN-IBN journalists that journalists were protected so that they could carry on reporting. But the journalists complained that the goon lawyers attacked them and the police remained a mute spectator.

Now, Bassi is unwilling to arrest other accused in the case including Umar Khalid. But he didn't show the same caution when it came to arresting Kanhaiya Kumar.

What's your reaction?
