KOCHI: Former High Court judge Justice K K Narendran died at a private hospital in Kochi on Friday owing to respiratory ailments.He was 88. He had served as a judge in the High Court from 1974 to 1975.Born at Moothakunnam on August 28, 1923,Justice Narendran began his career as a journalist with Deenabandhu after his college education. Later, he joined Kerala Kaumudi as its Ernakulam reporter.During his Kaumudi days, he was very close to K Sukumaran, editor of Kerala Kaumudi. As a journalist, he was highly committed to the profession.Later, after a short stint as a journalist, Justice Narendran joined the Ernakulam Law College.In 1951, after completing his studies, he began practising as the junior of the late advocate T N Sundara Iyer.As an advocate, he made his mark in civil, constitutional, service and education cases. After a sufficiently- long 23-year career as an advocate, Narendran became an additional judge in the High Court on May 30, 1974.It was on August 22, 1985, that Justice Narendran retired from service.After his long and elaborate career in the judicial service, he was in the forefront of all major social activities.He was able to involve in the common issues of Ernakulam district and Kochi city in particular.Justice Narendran had involved in a number of important issues that affected the social life of Kerala. He was chairman of the threemember commission for giving suggestions in reservation- related issues, including the creamy layer issue.The commission was appointed to study the role of backward communities in government service, public service enterprises and educational institutions, including universities.The Justice Narendran Commission report stating that backward communities would get a clear representation had led to a lot of discussion in the state.In September 2007, Justice Narendran took charge of the commission to probe into the Rajakumari land deal in which former Minister T U Kuruvila and his family members were allegedly involved. The case was about cheating a Non-Resident Keralite, K G Abraham, after promising him 50.52 acres of land at Rajakumari in Idukki district.The report by the commission said that there was no evidence to prove Kuruvila’s involvement in the issue.Justice Narendran, who had made his mark in the legal profession, had also written books on various legal aspects. He used to work with Kerala Law Times in the publication of legal books.He has written a couple of legal books. Kerala Education Rules, Kerala Services Laws, Labour Laws, Property Laws, Building Rent Rules, Taxation Manual, Agriculture Tax Laws, Kerala Debt Recovery Act and Essential Goods Act are some of the books penned by Justice Narendran.
