BANGALORE: Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Shivaraj Patil will be the new Lokayukta of Karnataka.Governor H R Bhardwaj on Tuesday issued an order for the appointment of Patil as the next Lokayukta following a recommendation by the state government to this effect.Patil will take charge once the incumbent Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde completes his tenure early next month. The Governor has also appointed Justice R Gururajan, former Judge of the Karnataka High Court as a Upa Lokayukta.Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who held a meeting with his Cabinet colleagues, on Tuesday morning finalised the names of Patil and Gururajan for the coveted posts.Patil, who hails from Gulbarga district, started his career as a lawyer at the Gulbarga district court. He served as a Judge of Karnataka and Madras High Courts and also as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court before his elevation as the Judge of the Supreme Court in 2000.Presently, he is serving as a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The 71-year-old Justice Patil was in news as the head of the one-man committee that studied the processes and procedures followed by the Department of Telecommunications in the allocation of licences and spectrum between 2001 and 2009.
