KOZHIKODE: CPM General secretary Prakash Karat on Friday admitted at the CPM party congress that the party had erred in taking a clear stance on granting Special Economic Status (SEZ) to various industrial projects. According to sources, Karat while replying to the discussions on Draft Political Resolution and Political Review Report that were presented by him on the inaugural day of the congress said Party had adopted a proactive stand on granting the SEZ status to many projects in Delhi. But the party had taken a totally different stance when the issue of sanctioning SEZ statues to Singur and Nandigram in West Bengal was floated, which was generally taken as an anti-farmer stand and attracted strong protest against the party across the country. In his reply, he referred to all criticisms levelled against him by West Bengal delegates in relation to the electoral fiasco faced by the Bengal party. Following his one-and-a-half-hour-long reply speech, party congress adopted the Political Resolution and the Political Review Report, accepting 349 amendments and 33 general suggestions made by the delegates. It was before the lunch break that the Congress adopted the resolution and Review report. Two delegates from Andhra Pradesh, who pressed for the vote, got embarrassed as there was only one vote against the resolution.Appreciating the participation of the delegates in the debate and the amendments moved forward, Karat said that the participation had reflected the strong unity of the Party around the political assessment, review and future direction that the party had to adopt. The amendments were all aimed to further elaborate and strengthen the basic framework of the resolution. He pointed out that all the state units had repeatedly endorsed the centralleadership’s decision to withdraw supportto First UPA government on the issue of civil Nuclear deal with United states. Two other important resolutions for SC and ST rights and on Central government’s Mineral Policies were also adopted at the party congress on Friday.Later, briefing the media, Politburo member Brinda Karat said the general trend of the amendments was to strengthen the future direction of the party. “It was near unanimous adoption as there was only one delegate voted against it out of the 789 delegates and observers participated,” she pointed out. She said the congress flayed the growing atrocities towards women. Asked about the Party’s stand on land issue at Nandigram and Singur she said the party did not believe that there was any forceful land acquisition. “We have no hesitation at all to admit our mistakes if any,” she summed up.
