Padma Bhushan N S Ramaswamy, founder director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, died here on Monday evening around 7.45. He was 86 and is survived by a son, daughter and three granddaughters.
Ramaswamy was director of city-based NGO Centre for Action Research & Technology for Man, Animal & Nature (CARTMAN). In 1972, Ramaswamy, who was then the director of National Institute of Industrial Engineering, became the first director of IIM-B.
He was born on March 2, 1926, in Thrissur, Kerala. He obtained his BSc and BE degrees from the Madras University and did postgraduate courses in Glasgow, Leigh and Stanford Universities. He was known for his active involvement in student movements, social service and public affairs.
He had served as chairperson for Animal Welfare Board of India and Committee on Meat Industry. He was also a consultant for the Airports Authority of India and Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources.
The news of his death was announced by CARTMAN Society’s Facebook page around 10 pm on Monday. Ramaswamy’s last rites will be performed at his Koramangala residence on Tuesday morning.
