KOCHI: The State Government’s decision to reinstate the provisions under Article 232 of the Panchayati Raj Act and Article 447 of the Municipal Act, which empowers local bodies to decide on granting licence to liquor outlets and bars will reduce alcoholism, observed the annual meeting of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC). The Bishop council urged the state to pass an ordinance to immediately implement the decision.The local bodies should be vigilant to utilise the power given to them under the act. Anti-liquor movement should be intensified, the KCBC said.KCBC spokesperson Fr Stephen Alathara said that the environment policy was finalised at the meeting. The policy will be implemented by the religious orders, educational institutions, hospitals, parishes and dioceses in Kerala. The official announcement to bestow Chevalier title on Shalom TV Chairman Benny Punnathara was made at the Bishop’s meeting by KCBC President Mar Andrews Thazhath.
