Periyar: Five National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets drowned in the Periyar river in Kerala on Wednesday morning. The cadets had gone to participate in the Malayattoor trekking camp. The cadets are reportedly from Delhi.
The incident occurred when one of the cadets fell into the river while washing hands and his other friends jumped into the river to save him. The victims were part of the over 1000 NCC cadets from across the country who have congregated at Malayattoor, a hilly area, for the 8-day camp which began on December 23.
The camp was being organised by the Ernakulam NCC Group of Kerala NCC Directorate. Defence Minister AK Antony expressed his anguish at the tragedy.
