Thiruvananthapuram: A man accused of massacring his family told the police that he did it to perform astral projection, a ritual which he claimed would allow him to communicate with souls of dead people.
Four members of the family were found dead on April 8 in their home here. The accused, Cadell Jeanson Raja, was arrested on Monday.
Raja told the police that performing astral projections gave him extra strength which helped him push his physical and intellectual limits.
He is still being interrogated by the police and will be produced before the court on Wednesday. The police are still unsure of the real motive of the crime and suspect he may be suffering from a disorder. They have called on an expert psychiatrist in questioning him.
The victims were: Dr Jean Padma, 58, her husband Rajathankam, 60, their daughter Caroline, 25, and Jean’s aunt Lalitha Jain, 70.
According to the police, Raja killed his parents and sister first on April 5. Each of them was hacked to death separately using a hatchet, which he bought online recently. His mother was his first victim. On April 7 night, he took Jain and killed her in another room.
