Nanguneri Inspector Vijayakumar, who allegedly shot dead small-time sand miner, Vanamamalai, at Marugalkurichi village on Tuesday last, and two other constables were placed under suspension on Saturday.
Subsequently, the Inspector was removed from the post and kept in reserve.
In this context, Tirunelveli DIG V Varadaraju placed the Inspector under suspension. Two police constables, Ibrahim and Selvakumar, attached to Nanguneri Police Station, who had accompanied the Inspector that day, were also suspended by Tirunelveli district SP Vijayendra S Bidari.
Meanwhile, in Namakkal, MDMK general secretary Vaiko urged the state government on Sunday to sack Inspector Vijayakumar and demanded his immediate arrest.
Talking to media persons in Thiruchengode, Vaiko said that it was a cold blooded act on the part of inspector of A Vijayakumar that he had gunned down 34-year-old Vanamamalai in Marugalkurichi without any major provocation. “The inspector must be removed from service without any delay. And he must be booked in a murder case and be arrested,” he stressed.
