Gujarat: The kite industry in Gujarat makes a profit of more than Rs 100 crore a year but very little of it reaches the people who actually make them.
Zarina Bibi of Jamalpur locality of Ahmedabad makes more than 2,000 kites every day.
She does the entire procedure of cutting, folding, bending and sticking single-handedly but gets a measly amount of Rs 70 a day for all her hard work.
"I've been making kites since I was a child. At least it helps me to earn something," Zarina Bibi said.
In this unorganised sector, others who are not as skilled as Zarina, earn even less, like between Rs 800 and Rs 1,500 a month.
Ahmedabad has more than 5,000 families who make kites all year long and almost all the workers are women.
"The big traders make all the money and they take home all the profit," Maqsud Khan, Social worker, Jamalpur, said.
But things might just be looking up as the state government and Self-Employed Women's Association are trying to organise the kite makers and have a representative for them who will ensure better payments.
