Kolkata: After political parties, it's now the turn of school students to block streets of Kolkata. And the 200-odd students of the government-aided Vivekananda Vidyapith in Jadavpur had serious grievances.
They alleged that the school's former secretary, a CPI-M member whose tenure with the school's administration ended recently, had roughed up and even molested the students regularly during the past several months.
"We tolerated this for a long time and even made police complaints. But no steps were taken. Last Saturday, he along with his fellow members of the CPI-M, raided the school and beat us up. Even the teachers weren't spared,” said a Vivekananda Vidyapith student, Surasree Mahajan.
They were so angry that even a heavy shower couldn't drive these students from the road.
The accused wasn't available for comment and the police preferred remaining mute spectators to this protest.
While the school remains closed indefinitely, the kids in uniforms enjoyed the support of their teachers and guardians.
Not often does Kolkata witness school students spontaneously blocking roads to protest activities of a section of school administration.
Traffic has remained suspended for over three hours now on this main arterial road in the heart of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's assembly constituency.
It looks like Bhattacharjee is in for yet another embarrassment, and this time from the unlikeliest of quarters.
