KOCHI: The protests from various corners against the report on population control have been brushed aside by Justice V R Krishna Iyer, who headed the commission which prepared the Women’s Code Bill 2011. He said here on Wednesday that the commission does not fear anyone and that it would not withdraw the controversial recommendations that call for birth control. Justice Iyer was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at the Ernakulam Govt Law College.Asked about protests by various denominations of churches, he said the commission would not fear anyone. “The commission does not fear any church and will not withdraw the provisions that recommend fine and imprisonment for those who go for a third child,” he said. The report of the ‘Commission on Rights and Welfare of Women and Children’, which was submitted to the Chief Minister last Saturday, sparked off a controversy across the state and invited the wrath of minorities as it included suggestions for birth control.Besides, it has come to light that the recommendations were finalised ignoring dissent from several members of the commission itself. These members had raised their voice against the two-child norm recommendation in the Bill after it elicited criticism from various corners.
