The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), which is agitating against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s order to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, has decided to file a Public Interest Litigation and objection to the Cauvery River Authority’s decision in the Supreme Court.
KRRS leaders and farmers Maralinge Gowda, Suresh of Sriranagapatna, Kumpu Gowda, a Zilla Panchayat member, and Prakash have left for New Delhi to file the PIL petition in the Supreme Court. The farmers, who are unhappy with the PM’s order passed “without knowing the ground reality or seeking reports from the Water Resource Department authorities”, want the SC to intervene to protect the interest of the farmers in the Cauvery basin.
Terming the CRA’s decision unilateral and politically motivated to appease Tamil Nadu, the KRRS members expressed hope that the SC would take a decision in favour of Karnataka farmers. They want the SC to send an experts’ committee to both the Cauvery basin and the delta region to take stock of the situation before coming to a conclusion.
KRRS leader Puttannaiah said Tamil Nadu with 24 lakh acres of irrigated land had two more monsoon months, whereas the Cauvery basin with less than 5 lakh acres under irrigation needed 33 tmc ft in KRS reservoir and 17 tmc ft in Hemavathi dam to save the crops.
Claiming that the state had released 7 tmc ft of water and Tamil Nadu needed 20 more tmc ft, he said the successive state and Central governments had failed to find a solution to the problem in the past 22 years.
Meanwhile, the KRRS activists led by Nagendra lay siege to the Command Area Development Authority and Irrigation Chief Engineer’s Office against release of water to Tamil Nadu.
They also threatened to take control of reservoirs if the government released any water to Tamil Nadu.
All for Farmers
Expressing his solidarity with agitating farmers from the Cauvery basin in the state, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna endorsed the stand taken by the state government on the release of water to Tamil Nadu.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Congress leader who also hails from the Mandya district said,”I do share my feelings with that of the agitating farmers on the issue.”
He said that it would be better if the state releases a minimum 4,500 cusecs of water to downstream till October 15.
