New Delhi: After the much hyped lecture at the IIM Ahmedabad, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad is all set to to deliver a lecture to a group of students from Harvard and Wharton in the US.

In a day-long session on December 27, Lalu is to meet a group of 137 students — 100 from Harvard Business School and rest from Wharton — and share with them the story of turnaround of the Indian Railways' fortunes.

He is credited with the stupendous turnaround of the fortunes of the Indian Railways, which earned a revenue surplus of Rs 13,000 crore by March 31, 2006.

Written-off as a "white elephant" two years ago, the transformation of Railways into the second largest profit-earning state-run unit has become a subject of keen interest for IIM-A.

The Railways, once slated for bankruptcy, is back on track and has become a model in corporate management.

Lalu, derided by many for his rustic ways and slammed for the mismanagement of Bihar during the 15 years his rule, Lalu surprised many by overseeing the transformation of the railways.

It wasn't just the students of IIM-A who were fascinated by Lalu's enterprise, US corporate house General Electric's chief travelled all the way to India to study the phenomenal success of the Railways. Management experts from Germany, Japan and France followed him.
