The State Government has decided to extend the minor lift irrigation programme (MLIP) to 270 blocks of 29 districts in the State. The programme is being implemented in 26 districts. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the officials concerned to extend the programme to Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri districts.

Official sources said the programme,  under the Biju Krushak Vikas Yojana (BKBY), is being implemented in blocks having less than 35 per cent irrigation coverage. The MLIP, taken up near rivers or streams, can irrigate two hectare. The State Government has decided to provide irrigation facilities to 4,000 hectare in kharif and rabi seasons through 2,000 MLIPs. While an MLIP costs Rs 2.7 lakh, the farmer has to invest only Rs 20,000. BPL tribal or Dalit farmers will have to contribute even less __ Rs 10,000. The cost for each farmer will be less if some of them join hands for an MLIP.
