THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A live workshop for cardiac surgeons on developing and perfecting their skills in open heart valve reconstruction surgery was organised by the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Science & Technology here the other day .The workshop also had sessions that dwelt upon AF Ablation, which elaborated on ways to tackle the Atrial Fibrillation ailment that occurs along with the valve disease.A team of doctors led by K Jayakumar, Professor and head of the Department of Cardio-Vascular Thoracic Surgery at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Science & Technology, and renowned Italian surgeon Carlos De Vincentiis led the workshop. ‘’Valve repair has a greater advantage as there is no need for anticoagulation medication all through the life span of the patient. Moreover, valve repair costs only one-third of the treatment charges a patient would need to shell out in the case of valve replacement,” said Dr Jayakumar.The Cardiac Surgery team SCTIMST has been successfully conducting valve repair, replacement and Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation.
