Mahatma Gandhi University to launch 5-year PhD programme
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google News Mahatma Gandhi University has launched a five-year integrated interdisciplinary PhD programme from this academic year. The five-year masters- PhD programme introduced at the Institute for Intensive Research in Basic Sciences (IIRBS)is the first of its kind in the state. “The programme, the first of its kind in the state, is part of education reforms and interdisciplinary research in frontier areas of knowledge. “The UGC has been asking all universities to commence new courses. We will have adjunct faculty from different parts of the country,” said Rajan Varughese, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, MG University. The programme aims to identify talented Bachelor’s degree holders and motivate them to pursue research through a multidisciplinary approach. It is similar to the one introduced at IITs and IISERs. With this, students can go for high-quality research from the initial years of the course. “We hope to get good research papers and patents, and produce excellent teachers,” he said. The course will be research- oriented with more focus on the experiments than just lectures such that they will come out with high quality publications. The flexible course comprises interdisciplinary areas such as science, engineering, medicine and pharmaceutical work which will be more like an internship. Students can hone basic experimental skills and go for advanced techniques in the laboratory. This will be followed by advanced research on a specific topic leading to a PhD thesis. Students can save at least a year compared to the PhD programme after post-graduation. The course work and research complement each other and students should complete both within five years. The programme will also make the academic atmosphere more lively. Seats are limited. The selection is based on test and evaluation camp. Students are eligible for fellowship of `6,000 for the first two years and  Rs 10,000 from third year. Those with 60 per cent marks in science subjects, B Tech, B Pharm, Medical and Paramedical Sciences can apply. The last date for submitting the applications is September 17. first published:August 29, 2012, 12:28 ISTlast updated:August 29, 2012, 12:28 IST
