In a major embarrassment to the Kerala unit of CPM, United Arab Emirates (UAE) has imposed a travel ban on Binoy Vinodini Balakrishnan, the elder son of its state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who is in an imbroglio after an alleged financial deal in the Gulf country. The UAE government has imposed the travel ban on February 1, 2018, based on the request of Dubai police. A Dubai-based firm, JAAS Tourism LLC, filed a civil case against him alleging fraud amounting to Rs 13 crore.
"We are sorry to inform you that an order of travel ban has been issued against you in case no. 102/2018/69 order on a petition - commercial due to the enforceable sum of 10,00,000 Dirhams," said the translation of a note issued to Binoy.
The complaint stated that Binoy knew his partner which is how he approached them for a loan. Binoy assured them that the money, which included approximately Rs 53 lakhs for the car and an additional Rs 45 lakh for other business deals, would be paid by June 2016 but that never happened. Cheques submitted by him bounced due to lack of funds. He was forced to file two criminal cases at the Dubai Police General Headquarters in 2016. The complainant claimed that the court then instructed approaching the Interpol to bring Binoy back since the Dubai public prosecution had declared him a wilful defaulter.
The news has been confirmed by Binoy's brother Bineesh Kodiyeri who took pains to defend his father.
"There is a travel ban on Binoy over a case following a deal worth one million AED which is equivalent to 1.72 crore INR. We have not denied the case in UAE. However, some people with vested interest are trying to create a smokescreen that there is a case of Rs 13 crore against Binoy. Moreover, it is not the responsibility of my father. For example, if I commit a murder, how will it fall on my father's shoulder? My brother and I are adults. The good and bad of our deeds are ours," he told reporters here on Monday.
Some party leaders from Kerala slammed CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury at the District meet in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, a day after he confirmed that a complaint has been received against Balakrishnan's son for alleged fraud.
The opposition attacked the ruling party saying that the CPM must issue an explanation on the allegations. Earlier, Speaking to News18, BJP’s national executive committee member and former state president V Muraleedharan said that he had written to the Enforcement Directorate to launch a probe into the allegations, adding that the allegations were grave.
