K Brahmam (48) alias Ashok, hanged himself in his police cells in the wee hours. But his family members accused the cops of torturing him to death. With the police and family members coming out with contradictory statements, an inquiry was ordered into the incident.District Collector Suresh Kumar has asked assistant collector Gandam Chandrudu and DSP Venkateswarlu to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances leading to Brahmam's death.

Locals say that Brahmam was an old offender and had been arrested many times earlier. According to them, he was caught redhanded while trying to steal at BHEL quarters and was handed over to police on February 11. But police superintendent PJ Victor told reporters that police arrested Brahmam on Monday on a complaint lodged by residents of BHEL quarters.

"He is a known offender who hails from Durki village of Birkur mandal of Nizamabad district. He has cases against him in Medak, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts, and was released from Nizamabad jail on December 20," he said.
