CHENNAI: : The airport police on Saturday arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh for reportedly sending a baggage containing telescope lens and empty cartridges, through another passenger.Acting on a tip-off, the police held Mohammad Yusuf at Delhi Airport after they received information from immigration officials at the airport there on his arrival.It all began in February last year when the police seized an abandoned bag that contained banned items - 10 telescope lens and empty cartridges. The baggage had the passport number of passenger Vijayan from Seerkazhi.Upon interrogation, the police found that it was Mohammad Yusuf who had asked Vijayan to carry the baggage from Dubai on his behalf. The police then registered an FIR and issued a lookout notice for Yusuf.Following information from immigration officials on the accused, a police special team arrested him.For his part, Yusuf claimed that the goods were playthings for his children, which he had purchased at a shopping complex in Dubai. The police are interrogating.Former bank manager held for fraudThe former manager of a private bank was held for helping a couple pledge imitation jewellery and take a loan of Rs 3.53 crore in Peravallur on Friday.Police said George Fernandez of Perumbur and his wife Vannila Fernandez had pledged 28875.6 grams at a private bank and had taken a loan of Rs 3.53 crore. But later, during inspection, officials found that 28332.4 grams of the jewellery were not gold, but imitation jewellery.Bank Manager, Thomas Francis, lodged a complaint with the police seeking action against the couple, the then manager, Raju Daniel, and another assistant manager.On investigation, police arrested Raju Daniel on Friday. George Fernandez had been arrested on July 25.
