New Delhi: A 42-year-old who set himself afire in police custody in a satellite town close to the national capital late Thursday died here Friday.

Rajeev Kapoor was arrested by the special operation group of the Noida Police on charges of fraud.

"Kapoor used to persuade women to marry him. When the women would agree he would flee with their valuables," said Soumitra Yadva, superintendent of police, Noida.

"There are several other cases of fraud pending against him," said Yadav.

Kapoor, who was at the sector 39 police station in Noida, was shifted to a room when he complained of uneasiness.

Kapoor used the lubricating oil of a sewing machine to set himself afire. He was taken to a private hospital at 1430 hours, IST where he later died.

Yadav said an independent inquiry has been started to ascertain the reason for his immolation. "We have suspended the station house officer and three other policemen. If any police officer is found guilty of harassing Kapoor we will take action," Yadav added.
