Mumbai: As the controversy over the movie ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ continues to grow, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Friday said that he sees Dr Manmohan Singh as a successful Prime Minister and not an "accidental" one. The statements by Raut are likely to add to the growing rift between Sena and BJP.

The Sena has also supported the Opposition demand for a JPC probe in the Rafale deal, embarrassing the Centre. Raut has also produced Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray’s upcoming biopic ‘Thackeray’. The Anupam Kher starrer movie is based on a book by Singh’s former media advisor Sanjaya Baru which was released during the 2014 elections.

The senior Shiv Sena leader, known for his sharp and vociferous jibes, said, "If a Prime Minister governs the country for 10 years and the people respect him, I don't see him as an accidental Prime Minister. After Narasimha Rao, if the country has got a successful Prime Minister, it is Manmohan Singh.”

It is also categorical that the Shiv Sena parliamentarian skipped former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s name, under whose government the Sena had its ministers. Even senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi became the speaker of Lok Sabha during that tenure.

Ever since the trailer of 'The Accidental Prime Minister' got released last week, reactions from political parties have grabbed headlines. The Congress party criticised the movie, claiming the movie portrayed the former Prime Minister in poor light. The BJP on the other hand shared its trailer from its official party Twitter handle and called the movie a "riveting tale of how a family held the country to ransom for 10 years."

The court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Muzaffarpur also lodged a complaint against lead actor Anupam Kher and others who are associated with the film for allegedly maligning the image of eminent politicians of the country, specifically former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Vijay Ratnakar Gutte directed film is all set to release next Friday.
