More seats and double shift for DU
More seats and double shift for DU
Extra working hours and more teachers are part of strategy to face the task of increasing capacity by 57 per cent.

New Delhi: The Government's quota proposal is here to say—the Delhi University (DU) has accepted this and plans to start double shifts and speed up recruitments to teach more students.

The university has the scope to increase 5 per cent seats whereas there is a need to increase the overall seats by 57 per cent to implement the 27 per cent OBC quota without affecting the general category seats.

"Considering the present situation in terms of infrastructure, availability of faculty members, the scope to increase the seats is only 5 per cent," says DU Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental.

"Therefore, we are now exploring many possibilities like starting double shifts in our colleges and enhancing infrastructure. We have also started the process of recruiting teachers in our university departments and colleges," he said.

"The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently sought information as to whether there is scope for increasing seats in the existing facilities."

"We have very marginal scope. In view of the present infrastructure facility, I feel that maximum immediate increase of the seats could be only by five per cent, that means about 2,000 to 2,500 seats can be added to the present capacity of 43,000 seats at the under graduate level," he said.

However, Pental said seats would not be increased in haste.

"We have to ensure that quality of education is not degraded. There is a need for a lot of development. Besides, the student-teacher ratio has to be maintained," he added.

He said the DU would make detailed plan soon on various steps to be taken to increase the seats.
