Mumbai: Following an altercation with her husband after she served him stale food, a woman threw her son on the railway tracks here from a moving train. The boy succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning, a police official said.

Three-year-old Yash sustained multiple fractures and was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital, but died early Wednesday morning, said N T More, senior police inspector of Vasai Railway Police.

The woman, Chhaya K. Kadam, a mother of three, has been arrested on charges of murder and remanded to police custody till Aug 22 by a Vasai court, More told IANS Wednesday evening.

Recounting the sequence of events, the official said that Tuesday afternoon, 30-year-old Chhaya's husband Kamlakar - a house painter - came home for lunch to their tenement in Malad east, a northwest suburb. She served him some left-over food from the previous night.

At this, Kamlakar flew into a rage and the duo had a quarrel. After he went back to work, Chhaya picked up her three children - daughter Varsha 9, and sons Ghanshyam, 7 and Yash, 3 - and went to Borivli railway station.

There she caught a train bound for Virar, the northernmost station on Western Railway (WR)'s suburban section. At Vasai station, she got off and took another train in the opposite direction - a south-bound train heading toards Churchgate.

When the train approached the Bhayander Creek, which separates Mumbai from the mainland, she suddenly picked up Yash and flung him out of the train.

As she started to drag Ghanshyam to the door, other shocked women commuters in the ladies compartment restrained her.

As she resisted and cried, the train reached Bhayander station, where she was handed over to the railway police.

Later, the police and railway officials went to the Bhayander Creek bridge and found Yash alive with multiple injuries. Yash was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli, where he died early Wednesday morning, More said.

More said that Chhaya revealed during interrogation that she planned to throw all her three minor children into the Bhayander Creek and then commit suicide, but the other commuters foiled her.
