Undeterred by the strike call by a section of LPG tanker lorry workers, the Motor Vehicles Department has decided to continue with the inspections in the wake of Chala tragedy.
“The government directive is to strictly enforce the rules being implemented now,” said a top official of the department. He refuted allegations that the officials were harassing lorry workers.
“The officials have been directed not to harass the workers. We feel that the current allegations are the lorry operators’ ploy to cover up their failure in following rules,” he said.
A high-level meeting held on September 4 had directed the department to carry out rigorous inspections across the state which ended on Tuesday. The Transport Commissioners have asked the Regional Transport Officers to file reports on the inspections carried out. “The reports will give a clear picture on the type of offences. It will also help us to recommend stringent rules and regulations, if necessary,” an official said. It is learnt that the most common offences found during the one-week inspection were lack of spark arrester, absence of additional driver and drivers without mandatory training in fire safety.
