Mulayam is faced with criticism of largescale irregularities in the just-concluded local body elections.

Jhansi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh on Saturday lashed out at opposition parties saying that they have been spreading such propaganda to divert people's attention from loss of ground in the state.

"The directionless Congress, BJP and BSP have lost ground in the state and are levelling false charges to divert people's attention knowing well that their performance in the local body elections has been dismal," Singh said.

Those raising fingers at the impartiality of the polls indulged in these activities in the past when even ballot boxes used in elections were manipulated, he said.

Singh, who resumed the cheque distribution programme with the last phase of polling for the local body polls ending Friday, also advised his partymen to desist from internal bickerings and focus their attention on the assembly elections scheduled next year.

The Samajwadi Party has always emerged stronger and united when faced with challenges, he said recalling how it "gained strength" when its leaders were subjected to harassment by the then BSP government.

The Chief Minister also criticised the Centre's foreign policy as also the failure to check spiralling prices.

While distributing cheques among 3,949 unemployed youths and 2600 girls, Singh said the government's aim was to provide jobs to 10 lakh youths of the state.
