New Delhi: NDA delegation on Thursday met President A P J Abdul Kalam and sought his intervention to save Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee who is on a hunger strike to protest acquisition of farm land for a Tata project.
After almost a half-an-hour meeting with the President, NDA convenor George Fernandes told reporters, "We requested him to intervene to save the life of Banerjee".
BJP chief Rajnath Singh, said he believed both the Centre and especially the state government can step in to save Mamata's life.
To express his support on Singur issue, the BJP chief has visited the Trinamool leader twice this month.
Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee sought Kalam's personal intervention to save the Trinamool leader, said Rajnath.
The BJP chief said Kalam was also worried about her health and has inquired about her condition from Bhattacharjee.
The BJP chief, however, refused comment on Ratan Tata's remarks that competitors were fuelling the Singur row.
Trinamool, however, categorically said negotiations can be considered if the West Bengal Chief Minister agrees in principle to return the acquired land.
