KARIMNAGAR: The state government has shelved plans to build a 2,100 MW gas-based power project at Nedunoor of Timmapur mandal. The Rs 3,336 crore project could not be completed due to nonallocation of gas by the Government of India. Telangana Congress MPs had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and petroleum minister Jaipal Reddy but in vain.
The project required about 9.7 million metric standard cubic metre per day of natural gas for which Reliance Industries Ltd had given firm assurance for supply of gas in April 2007 and advised APGenco to conclude all agreements. The state power generation utility duly completed all processes like land acquisition, tender for works and was waiting for nod from the central government.

Former chief minister K Rosaiah had laid foundation stone in February 2010 for the first phase of 700 MW but no works started with just fences put up at the site. APGenco which hoped the gas allocation would be given by the Centre before March 2012 (11th plan), had to give up the project as there was no assurance from the central government.

Meanwhile, nearly 200 families of Nedunoor village who had to give up their land for the project said their lands were acquired in 2008 at Rs 2.80 lakh per acre and one member of a family was assured a job. But no rehabilitation works have been taken up so far.
