New Delhi/Bhopal: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday sought suo motu cognisance of reports on the death of a professor in college poll violence Ujjain and sought a report from Madhya Pradesh Government.
The commission has asked the state’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh to send a report within 15 days.
The commission said that if media reports that students beat H S Sabharwal to death are true then it’s a serious violation of human rights. Sabharwal died on August 26 after he Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members allegedly roughed him up while he was supervising union elections at Madhav College in Ujjain.
The Commission also took note of media reports that police officials at the college site did not take any action to save the teachers and prevent violence.
The commission has received a complaint from the professor’s son, Himanshu Sabharwal, that the police had tampered with the evidence and were protecting the guilty.
Governor seeks probe update
In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar has sought a fresh report on the status of the probe into Sabharwal's death.
The Governor sought a new report as the earlier one submitted by the government was confined to a certain period and several developments, including the arrest of two ABVP leaders in connection with the death.
Jakhar wanted to know whether investigating agencies were facing hurdles in taking action against more suspects.
