New Delhi: A Bangkok court, for the first time, issued orders for extradition of Thai National Wuthikorn Narunartwanich alias Willy to face trial in India in arms smuggling case.
There are allegations against him for illegal procurement of a shipload of sophisticated arms and ammunition from a foreign country. There are charges that he used to smuggle arms and ammunitions to insurgents in North East.
Indian security agencies claimed that the extradition is important in terms of law enforcement agencies response to insurgency in the North Eastern regions.
DG NIA, Sharad Kumar, confirms extradition to CNN-IBN that this foreign national extradition happened for the first time between Indian and Thailand.
It was learnt that he is already in custody of Indian intelligence agency and likely to reach India on Tuesday night.
“This case (numbered RC-01/2010) is related to a criminal conspiracy for illegal procurement of arms and ammunitions, in which a top functionary of NSCN (IM), Anthony Shimray was arrested by the NIA,” a statement issued earlier by the NIA reads.
“Investigation had revealed that Anthony Shimray had negotiated several times with Wuthikorn Naruenartwanich to fix a deal to the tune of US $ 1.2 million to procure huge quantity of arms and ammunition. For this deal, US $ 800,000 was paid by accused Anthony Shimray to co-accused Wuthikorn,” it reads.
On March 23, 2011, the NIA had filed a chargesheet against all the accused under sections 120B, 121A, 122 of IPC and 16, 17, 18 and 20 of UA (P) Act.
Presently Anthony Shimray is in jail and facing trial in NIA court Delhi.
